"THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES SHALL TEACH ME SPEED." tING JOHN', ACT IV.
— —- The subject of primary interest in Tauranga during the week has boon the arrival of Mr Ve-my Stewart and party of special settlors for the Katikati lands, and judging the now arrivals as a whole, there seems every reason to believe that the rigid men have been brought to the rigid place, and that the settlement of the Katikati lands will speedily bo proceeded with. By the agreement made between Mr Yesoy Stewart and the Secretary for Crown Lands, when the institution of this special settlement first became an established fact, it was decided that at least thirty families should arrive either at Auckland or Tauranga before the first day of January, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-six; and provided that such a number did arrive, the settlement should bo deemed to have been formed and the settlers bo entitled to select their land. The remainder of the block of 10,000 acres set apart for the special purposes of this settlement still remains available until the date before mentioned, but not afterwards, for such others of the said party as may arrive before that date who shall be entitled to make their selection on arrival, b p to the present, therefore, the terms of the arrangeL’tojit have been laiihiully carried out.
Mr esoy Stewart lias arrived the stipulated time with number of families, and lots been drawn .for she right of of the land, tiio settlers luivo atone! proceeded to Xatikati to- % selection accordingly. The 10th cW-t ' in the agT.'.nrait provides of the said party of tlie eighteen years and upwards shall U entitled to select and occupy f vr 'i awes. with an additional twenty aer-s iu r> spent of each child between tb ages of twelve and eighteen, provifbi that not more than throe, huutlrod acres shall bo held and occupied b? any number of persons funning e household.'’ The provides that “ at the expirationoltb three years from tin.- date of the cow nionceineut of occupation the gJi ;/ George Yesey Stewart and every oilier occupier shall bo entitled to aJOrowa' grant to tho land on his proving to tb satisfaction of tho Waste Lands Commissioner that ho has during tlic whole of the previous throe years been h bon d fide occupation of the said land lv continuous residence thereon, and that at least ono-ilfth part thereof is under cultivation.” The holder of a oertitiute of occupation, shall, however, "b» entitled to a Crown grant at any time prior to the expiration of three years on proof, to the satisfaction of tha Waste Lands Commissioner, that tha whole of the land comprised in tha certificate is fenced and cultivated, and a dwelling house erected thereon,” In fact, every provision has been made is far as tho promoters are concerned to make the special settlement a success, and on the part of those with whom itrests to work out the details of the;; seherao there will doubtless ho displayed that energy and perseverance which cannot fail to reward the efforts V made. The location of so large & body of settlers in an out-settlement cannot * fail to advance the general welfare d tho Tanranga district, and we are sure' that in the new field of labour in which tho Xatikati settlers have embarked, they may confidently depend upon the cordial co-operation of the older residents in this district. ’ .
