Mr Atkinson, in disclaiming any intention of the Government to possess themselves of Otago Education Beserves, casually remarked upon tho centralising tendencies of Provincial Governments.
Sir George Grey immediately retorted l)y declaiming: against the persistency of Government in speaking offensively of Provincial Governments villi Iho view of lowering them in the eyes of the people, and generally denounced Government dealing with public hinds and with piddle men. and accused them of a desire to hnrko enquiry into the charges t now being examined regarding their land transactions hy hurrying the Abolition of Provinces*. Ho said that if ho were on the Government Benches ho would at once walk: down from them sooner than ho associated with such charges, all of which lie could prove. 1 1 e stigmatised Mr Luehie a hanger-on of Government, hut was called to order and apologised for using such expression in dhe heat of debate.
