Captain Marks, Pilot for Tauranga Harbour, will take up his quarters here, to settle permanently in about three weeks time. The Pilot boat is now being built. We shall be glad to welcome Captain Marks as a settler in this district.
The 9 s Murray, recently trading in these waters, has been, selected as tno branch boat to run the San Francisco mails from Nelson to West Coast settlements, tno subsidy being £350 per month.

We learn that Gregory's party, engaged in sawing timber at the Horo Horo forest, on the iaupo Koad, has been prevented by the natives from continuing work. The stoppage, however, is only expected to be a temporary one, and was caused by a squabble amongst the natives as to ownership of the land.
Mr Brearleys butcher’s shop—hitherto known as Frasers Hall, Beach Road-wag opened on Saturday for the first time. The building baa been much altered and improved, a new front and verandah erected, and the interior nicely fitted with all the requirements of the trade.
T *l® Tauranga Rifle Volunteers, under the coraniand of Captain Norris, held their usual monthly inspection parade on Saturday last. There was a jery fair muster. Captain Norris minutely inspected the arms and accoutrements, and put the men through various evolutions for about an hour and a half. A meeting was held at the Tauranga Hotel immediately after parade for the election of an officer to fill the vacancy of Lieutenant, caused by the resignation of Lieutenant Samuels, and other business. Mr C-OiCbrook, after being duly proposed and seconded was admitted a member of the corps. There were two candidates for the Lieutenancy— Sub-Lieuten-ant Morrison and Sergeant A. W. Burrows Lpon proceeding to a ballot, the election was declared to have fallen upon Sergeant A W Burrows. Captain Norris then duly declared* Mr Barrows elected Lieutenant of the corps, and he received tue congratulations of the memben. Mr Burrows replied in a short but suitable speecn, and the meeting broke up.
