OPOTIKI.
(FEOM OXJtt OWN COUKESEON BEKT.)
~ ~ ~ July 13 Fanny ketcli, Williacti Musters, maator from Auckland, arrived on the 7th instant with two passengers and genera! cargo. Our old steamer acqua : ntance “ Billy Mns ard ’ appeared m a new character on this occasion. Ho has taken charge of the Fanny Kelly for a few trips during Captain Bakers indisposition. A frienllj and well contested match came off on the morning of the 10th at the Bifio Range between Constab o Joyce, AC, and Mr O. D. Bitch* Held, which resulted in Mr Joyce winning by two points only. Another match is to come off shortly between Mr John Wrigley, Brewer, of Tauranga * and another man to be chosen by him, and Mr J. A. Basst, and another for the Opotiki side • stakes, £5 a side, each to fire on their own ranges’, Mr H. W. Penny, Auctioneer, held his monthly sale on Saturday at his Auction Booms. The variety of the catalogue attracted quite a concourse, and our worthy Auctioneer’s felicious style of giving and taking chaff and doing business at the same time, kept ua thoroughly amused, and moreover, induced us to part the more readily. The goods offered consisted of furniture, books and a large assortment of fruit trees, which were placed in Mr Penny’s hands for disposal by Mr Dodd, our local gardener and seedsman. Some of the furniture went very cheap ; other articles again realised unusually high prices. The books all went high, many of them realising more than their market value. The fruit trees also went at a good price. The public appear to fully appreciate Mr Penny’s praiseworthy endeavours to advance the commercial interests of Opotiki, and he is already receiving the most liberal patronage • not forgettmg a really first class quality of beer which he is turning out from his brewery, and which is now on tap at all our hotels. I can scarcely express to you the regret I feel at having omitted to mention *' Fair Play” in my list of “ those to whom honor is due” for their services at the late fire. Poor fellow’} and doesn’t he let loose the vials of his wrath on the subject * —its the majestikkle.it thing I have seen for eoraer lm6 j i- 1 ho P e ho was not lhe one Sergeant Mason found foraging round the bakehouse in the dark on that occasion. However, let mo now make all the reparation 1 can, and m thanking “Fair Play” for bis doubtless valuable services, recommend him to go in for putting out fires or any other useful work, but in mercy to your subscribers, not to attempt using a pen. Tenders are called for by public notice for the re-erection of tl c Wharf Hotel recently destroyed bv fire. ihe plana, wbich are open for inspection at Messrs J.-icobsohn & Co.’s Store shew a very fine two storey building, which, when completed will bo a great ornament to the place, *
