(i'KOat OtTE OWN COIIEESPOSDESI.) The steamer Pretty Jane, from Napier, the other day brought our new telegraphist Mr Klliott wife and family. We hail with delight the advent of tms long expected arrival, who promises us the inestimable advantage of telegraphic commumcation in the course of a few days. Mr Koad, of Poverty Bay, was also a passenger by the steamer on his way to Auckland. It is six years since we had a visit from this gentleman before. He took the opportunity of riding out through tne farming district, and expressed himself hio-bly p.eased with the great improvements and increased extent of cultivated land in every direction round the settlement.
A complimentary dinner was given to Mr L A Levy before leaving for Auckland last week* ■Luring the four years in which Mr Levy has been amongst us in his capacity of manager of Messrs bamueis and Jucobsohn’s establishment, bo has worthily earned a reputation as an energetic, able business man, as the best shot in the Opotiki torces, and more than ail, a downright “ iollv good fel!ow ; The dinner was given by the Bay ol Lenty Volunteer Cavalry, and was supplied by Mr Busst of the Royal Hotel. The impartial justice accorded by the guests to the good things provided by mine host, is the best compliment I can offer to Mr Busst. After the table was cleared, the usual loyal toasts were drunk, when the Chairman Cornet Jno. P. Connelly, rose, and J, a neat and feeling speech, proposed tho health of the guest of the evening, Mr L. A. Levy, which was drunk with acclamation.
