THE NEW TOWN BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I believe the majority of ratepayers will agree with me that Mr Firth Wrigley should go in head of the poll at the coming annual election of trustees for the Town Board, but unless there is a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull altogether, such a result will, 1 fear, not come to pass. There must have been shameful neglect somewhere in collecting rates this year. A number of ratepayers resident a few hundred yards only from the office of the Town Board had not paid their rat o t the 30th June, and consequently have no vat ; the election will therefore, to a very great extent, remain in the old groove, unless new comers and others, who, by right of being in possession of property, and liable to he rated on the 30 th June last, make a point of attending the meeting on Saturday week—every man of them, and vote in the direction of radical complete reform. Book at the state of the roads at the present time ; look at the amount of money that has been expended ; but where are the improvements in proportion to funds expended ? Echo answers where, indeed ! We want a change in our members ; the present ones have worked too long together, with the exception of Mr Conway (who has, I believe, faithfully represented the Quarter Acres againatlongodds). Ido not go “ the whole bog,” and say turn them all out and get a new Board altogether j on the contrary, I think it would be far better to retain soma of the old leaven. I think wo could get a far better chairman than Captain Tanks, but as he has signifbd his intention of standing again, it would be a graceful act to return him once more in our Town Council. Mr Thomas Wrigley is, without doubt, an excellent business man, and should certainly be elected. To sum the whole thing up, my advice is the advice of one who does not often rush into print, and who has the interest of Tauranga sincerely at heart— return Captain Tanks Messrs Thomas Wrigley and Conway, and the new candidate, Mr Firth Wrigley. I think the three former will go in without much assistance from resident ratepayers ; therefore, the plan of action will be for those who wish to see a change effected in the existing state of affairs to cross out ah other names on the voting piper except Firth M rigley and another man, to be hereafter determined I hope my fellow settlers will not think 1 am dictating • I am only suggesting according to my humble opinion for the public goodI am, &c., 63 m T , _ Townsman, lauranga, July 7, 1874.
