To-morrow is the anniversary of the Queen’s Birthday. Monday, we presume, will bo observed as a general holiday in Tauranga. Tenders are invited,.for the erection of a Porch to the Roman Catholic Church, Tauranga. Particulars may be'Obtained from Mr Shaughnessy. We notice that objections against claims to vote for several electoral districts in the province appear in the Auckland papers. We presume that the Registration Officer for the East Coast has received no objections for his district, as none have yet been published, and the time for holding Revising Court is fast approaching.

Captain Turner has requested us to state that the surplus money, £2 18s 3d, after paving all the expenses of the banquet given to Cap Vain Fraser by the military settlers of Tauranga, has been handed over to Mrs Farrell, widow of Robert Farrell, late Sergeant Ist Waikatos. Mr Sydney Crapp, is successfully carrying on the survey between Te Kaha and Raukokori, on the Opokiti and East Cape road. Good Templary seems to be making very considerable progress among the natives. Mr. C. B. Do Thierry, P.G.D.R.Wk, G.T., to whom has been specially entrusted the duty of enlisting the sympathies of the native race in the movement, has already got thirty lending natives initiated in the A uckland lodges, and ten more have expressed their desire to join the sober band, and they will he admitted to the brotherhood shortly. Mr De Thierry has received an invitation to attend the native gathering at Ohinemuri for the purpose of explaining the principles of the order. From the preparations that are going on in shipping rum from Auckland it may be inferred that the natives do not anticipate any sudden conversion. Nevertheless Mr Do Thierry is determined to attend and sow the good seed, trusting that it will bear fruit in due season.— Auckland Star.

"We regret, says the Auckland Star of a late date, that a local paragraph in our yesterday’s issue respecting a case yesterday adjudicated upon in the Police Court is calculated to convey a misapprehension. We understand that it is not correct that Mr Buckland, the magistrate engaged in the investigation, and the defendant “ walked to Canning’s and lunched amicably together.” We are informed by Mr Buckland that, instead of this, he having already lunched, was passing through Mr Canning’s lower dining-room, on his way to the street, when, being beckoned to by some of those seated at a table at which also sat the defendant, Mr Buckland sat down for a few moments at the table, and then proceeded on his way.

In the office of a Wisconsin journal there is a compositor who sets type so rapidly (says the paper) that the friction of his movements fuses the leaden emblems in his “ stick,” making them solid, like stereotype plates. The only way to prevent this is to have his case submerged with water ; and the rapidity of his motions keeps the water bubbling and boiling, so that eggs have been frequently boiled in the space-box. Pipes load from the bottom of his case to a boiler in the press-room, and the steam generated by the fast compositor runs the machinery. In one day he set so much that it took all hands, from editor to “ devil,” two weeks to read the proof—and it wasn’t his good day for setting typo either, it is hardly necessary to quote American Taper.

In accordance with announcement, the Tauranga Light Horse and 'Hide Volunteers paraded on Thursday afternoon in the Government Paddock for inspection by Major Gordon, Inspector of Volunteers. The notice given was absurdly short, and only a few members of the Cavalry responded to the call ; however, those on the field went through a short drill in a satisfactory manner, under the command of' Lieutenant Conner. Sub-Lieutenant Asher was also in attendance. The Tauranga Kifles turned out in capital style, and Major Gordon “ put them through” a number of exercises, which were performed in a manner that would not disgrace any Volunteer Corps in the colony. Before dispersing, the Inspecting Officer informed Captain Norris and men, that his report of the T.R, V. would, he was happy to say, be entirely satisfactory. Mr Lewis Samuels has tendered his resignation of the Commission he held as Lieutenant in the Tauranga Rifle Volunteer Corps.

In reply to enquiries made by the President of the Mechanics’ Institute, relative to the Provincial Government grant of books for the Institute Library, the following telegram was yesterday received by him from Ouptain Morris M.P.C. t

To E. M. Edgcumbo, Esq. “No Library has books yet. £lo granted for Tauranga.”

Signed, G. B. Morris

We take the following from the report of the last mceti l g of the Central Board of Education, Auckland, published in the Southern Cross of a late date :

“ Tauranga—An application of .C2 t 17s for fisting, &e., was deferred for the present ; but when in a position to do so, the Board promised fa-give the matter their favourable consideration ’ It will be seen, therefore, that- the application is only deferred for the present for want of funds.
