A CONTRADICTION.

We have been requested to publish the following : fTBANSHiTION. ] Tanranga, _ May 13 th, 1874. To all the Europeans of Auckland and of all other places throughout this island, greeting—hearken ;

The Good Templars Standard eavs that (Charles Baron De Tbeirry) held a great meeting with me and my people at Maketu. Hearken : He held no meeting with us, nor did I see that man—no, in nowise. Enough of that. Another word ho avers (that is Charles Baron De Thierry) induced me to give up the use of intoxicants.

Hearken now : From the time of toy birth up to the present time, I have maintained my strong aversion to that beverage. Here ia another word : On the 2nd of May, a notification appeared ia the Evening S tar newspaper, which says that a certain European gave me a bottle of rum in the month of September, 1873, and he states that I asked for it. Hearken : that man is the Father of falsehood. I did not ask that European for rum, nor did I receive from him a bottle of intoxicants—what care I for that maddening drink ? I know what is the basis of this assertion ; it is that all the Europeans may hear, (these statements) so that he (Charles Baron De Theirry), may be reared up to become a head of the Good Templars. Perhaps he will derive gome pecuniary benefit (on account of the statements) from the European side.—-Enough, (Signed), Tk Pokitia Tarattht. Publish this in the “ Good Templars Standard” and in other papers. [[Translated by O. O. Davis, who w ,s j.r*with two other Maori interpreters wlii* . i'u ■ signed the original, that is, put his marl; to it, after the document had been duly read bo uim.j
