We are pleased to inform our readers that a large addition has been made to the Mechanics’ Institute library -within the last few days. The new volumes comprise worts of fiction, travel, | and instructive reading. W c notice with great | pleasure that the room night after night is crowded with persons playing chess, perusing English and Australian periodicals and papers. Mr Walmesley, the indefatigable librarian, has a small class every evening leaiming arithmetic and. useful branchesof every day knowledge. We look on, the Mechanics’ Institute as the greatest boon ever conferred on the Tuuranga district, and congratulate the founders, Mr Edgcumbe (the present president), Mr Ball (vice-president), and the indefatigable secretary (Mr Sisley), on them labour of love.

JMr George Kilh, of the firm of Ellis and W rigky, brewers, of this town, will be a passcuger by King Cobb, on Tuesday nest, for Napier, ufc which, place he is about to start business in the same une. Mr Ellis is well and favourably known m tins province as an enterprising, ' shrewd man of business and n clever engineer. We regret his departure from amongst us, and wish him prosperity, “ ’Xis not in mortals to command success,” but we are quite sure lie will endeavour to deserve it; and if, in his now field of labour, ho produces beer anything like equal m quality to that turned out' of Spring Well Brewery, Tauranga, it will be quite an institution m Hawke’s Bay. Our special correspondent’s letter from Taupo, giving an account of the (Governor’s visit to that piacc, arrived too late for publication to-day. It shall appear in our next. At a meeting of the members of the Tauranga Eiile Volunteers, held pursuant to advertisement •at the Hotel at 7 p.m. on Wednesday last, Captain Norris presiding, a letter from Lieutenant Thompson, of the Opotiki Rifle olunteers, conveying n challenge from that corps to fro a friendly match with the Tauranga Rifle "Volunteers for two cases of ammunition, was read and discussed. It was decided to accept the same on the following terms, viz :—2OO, -100, and, 500 yards, seven shots at each range, any position, (Government regulations ; the number of competitors on each side not to exceed ten; to bo optional whether it be ammtmnition or the value in money ; the day to be fixed as soon as possible after the Governor’s visit (dally expected) ; the ■names to be elected at next parade/ The foregoing was directed to be embodied in a letter and sent to Lieutenant Thompson. At the hearing of civil cases in the Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday morning, Mr Edgcumbe. J.P., commented strongly on tha want of punctuality displayed on the part of the public in attending to defend or prosecute cases for adjudication. One case set down for bearing having been called, as is usual, three times, and there being no appearance of the plaintiff, was at once struck-off the list, although the plaintiff was on the way to the Court bouse. We quite concur with Mr Edgcumbe in his remarks, and trust that the example set bv the Bench last Wednesday will be followed by the Magistrate and other Justices of the Peace in the district. The circumstance should act as a warning to the public generally.
