ARTESIAN WELLS.
TO THE EDITOfi.
hare lately spoken to two gentlemen, visitors to Taumnga, who bare expressed their surprise at not finding artesian wells in our town--B^lp*. 3?b© formation of the surrounding country kJ e *’ eß ft? im P r ® 9eion that these welts awl J f‘* COoasful ly »«nk almost any place in or about the town. A* there is, of course, sot tbs most remote probability of the Towu Board moving m the matter. I would like to see soma enterprising person make the experiment. Should it succeed, the Immense superiority of the water °T e J/ U °ft« supplies would quickly be recog. tito Board might then be suaded to grant an expenditure of forty or fifty pounds for the sinking of three or four wells in convenient places for the use of the public. Qas pipmg suitable for artesian wells can be had for two shillings a foot. In Christchurch, the average depth is, I think, about fifty or sixty feet bat here in the township I fancy water would be rrached at a much less depth. As a rule the cost of sinking is trifling, I am, &0., D.K.
