TAURANGA RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Yesteedat. {Before Major Roberts, 8.M.) A CRCSESK NATIVE. Harawira Kotae was charged with this offence, and fined 5s and costs, or, in default, 24 hours imprisonment. ATTEMPT TO KEBCUE A PBIBONBB. Tapara Pirikawa (lat© King*# messenger) was charged as above. Lewis Samuels deposed that the prisoner attempted to incite other natives to join in the attempted rescue from custody of Kotae on the previous day. _ Sergeant N&dcn deposed that the prisoner had interfered with him in the execution of his duty, and had endeavoured to rescue the prisoner Kotae! The sergeant had then, with some difficulty, arrested Tupara and conveyed him to the lock-up. sergeant Naden had, however, no desire to press the charge against the prisoner, as he, on previous occasions, had given him considerable assistance. ads sergeant had arrested Kotae for his own protection. He believed that Tupara did not know what he was doing, being under the influence of ■drink. His Worship said he could not overlook the •offence altogether. He would fine the prisoner xT and costs, or one week’s imprisonment. The aext offence would be severely treated.
