The Southern Cross to-day should bring the Suez mail, as the Paterson, with the English mail on board, ought to hare arrived in Auckland on Saturday last.

There are three buildings in Tauranga which form, as it were, an obelisk, to mark the strides we have lately taken in material advancement and permanent prosperity. We refer to the offices of her Majesty’s Customs and the branch offices of the New Zealand and the ♦National banking associations, all of which hare only recently become institutions amongst ua. The premises occupied by the Collector of Customs and the New Zealand Banking Company are exceedingly well situate near to the Tauranga Hotel, decently fitted inside, and presenting a respectable exterior to the outside world, thanks to the capital style in which Messrs Bundon and Conway and Mr Bickers effected their work. The manager of the National Bank has found a very comfortable abiding place next to the office of the Bay op Plenty Times. Those who remember the shop, until lately in the occupation of Mr Leahy, bootmaker, would be astonished at the transformation that has taken place. The front office has been lined and elaborately varnished, an entrance porch erected, handsome windows bung, massive counter and ornamental desks constructed, with all the latest fittings and conveniences necessary in a well - appointed establishment. The sanctum sanctorum, or manager’s room, is also nicely fitted up. Mr B. F. Roller was entrusted with the alterations, and he has performed his contract in his u c ual excedent and workmanlike manner, Mr Berth wick also deserves great credit for the painting, varnishing, &o. If we may believe at ail in the promises of Ministers, Tauranga will shortly have a great influx of population, and, as a matter of course, with the newcomers will come greater competition in nearly every branch of business. With the introduction of new men will also come new ideas and a laudable spirit of emulation—a spirit which, if not abused, will do a great deal in the way of improving the taste of the public and the appearance of our town.

The deputation elected to wait on the Ton Donatd McLean, C.M.GK, on his arrival here relative to the setting aside of a piece of land for a public recreation ground for the district, met at the Tauranga Hotel on Saturday, November 29th, and on Monday afternoon last—The Rev Charles Jordan, A 8., in the chair. Ail the members of the deputation were present at both meetings with the exception of Captain Morris, M.P.C. Mr Edgcumbe laid before the depuration a written petition for presentation to Mr McLean setting forth the advantages of the site at Judea, and having a tracing of the land annexed. The petition was approved of unanimously. Mr Commissioner Clarke was occupied nearly the whole of yesterday in a disputed land claim between the Ngatihe andTe Materawaho touching the title of a section known as Ahipouto. Messrs Mitchell and Stewart are progressing rapidly with their sub-contract of a portion of the continuation of the Eatikati road. The section from Wairoa to the end of the Wainui swamp is expected to be completed in a few days. Major Roberts, officer commanding the district, left Tauranga on Saturday afternoon on a visit of inspection to the various outposts of the Armed Constabulary between this place and Opotiki. _ At a meeting, convened by Mr J. T. Morrison, held on Monday evening, in the Tauranga Hotel, Mr McCaw in the chair, it was resolved by an overwhelming majority, that the deputation appointed to Wait upon the Honorable Donald McLean on his arrival, regarding the proposed site for a recreation ground at Judea, be requested to carry out the original resolution passed at the public meeting on the 22nd November last.

We have to acknowledge the receipt, from Mr James Foley, of Katikati, of a chicken with four legs and twenty toes. It was born on Sunday laat, and was immediately embalmed in the best Geneva. The treatment, however, could not have been correct, for, we regret to say, when it reached us it was quite dead. It is a sweet thing in chickens, and may be seen on application to our typo.

A petition, to bo presented to the Hon Donald McLean, praying that the Government paddock may bo set aside as a reserve for a public recreation ground was in course of signature yesterday.

Dr Croke, Homan Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is about to make a tour through the districts of the Bay of Islands, Hokianga, Mongonui, and Wfaangaroa. The Bishop will be accompanied on hia pastoral pilgrimage by the Bev Father Walter Macdonald.
