A meeting of the Stewards of tdie Tauranga o ofc.ey Ci uh wus bold on Saturday evening in (he Taiinujga Hotel. Present—-Captain Morris' end Messrs Samuels, Ellis, and Penny. After the minutes of the last meeting had facet, read, the (Secretary (Sir Samuels) placed before the meeting a letter from Mr K. M. Edgrumbe tendering his resignation as steward. Mr Edge umbo’s resignation was accepted without discussion, and Mr I>. Asher unanimously elected in Ids stead. It was then resolved that toe races should bo advertised to take place on or about the 2nd January, and that the stewards shoo'd on Tuesday (vestordav) morning inspect the new course, and determine if it be possible to get it in order in time. Xu the event oi such not being the case, it was resolved to petition Major .Roberts for the use of the Grove mine nt paddock to hold this season’s races in ; and to take energetic steps to hare the new course prepared for the races of ’75. Since writing the above we learn that four of (he Race Stewards, vis.. Messrs Morris, Ellis, Asher, and Fenny, have examined the new race course, and determine d that, the next races shall take place there, it being only necessary to cut and burn the fern 1 and ti-'ree to make the course fit to ran on. The above-named gentlemen have pegged out the course, and inform us that it will prove one of the best iu the colony. It, is fiat, and is partially surrounded t>v hills, from which lookers on may see everything from start to finish. in another column will be found an advertisement calling lor tenders for ch aring the course. Though slow to act, tho Stewards are now beginning to prove that tho public dud well to select them for their responsible posit ion.
A public meeting was held at the Tanranga lloit-i on Saturday evening last, to take into consideration the best stops to be adopted to secure a pubiic recreation ground or people’s park for Taurangd. After considerable d scus.-ion, it was decided by amajority of fchosepreseui that a portion o- Jnnri on the f/uden side of t 1; o r; vr, situ it<* between the new road to the Wairoa and the M .or i set t'eiuent, should be applied for as being a suitable site. Tbo following gentlemen were appointed to act ns a deputation to wait upon the Honorable Mr McLean on his arrival at Tauvuiigii, and to make the necessary application to vu.-le gen to-man : rwv. AT r Jordan, Captain Alorris, A1.8.C. ; Messrs Chadwick, Kdgoutnbc, and Remington. After a vote of thanks’ to the chairman tbo meeting separated. Amongst the passengers by the Souther;: Cross on Saturday last was Mr K. J. Gill, of the * alive x.-*cpat 1 uient, A» ellington, who from t he llrst furmation of this township bos taken a lively inheres, io its welfare and progress. During the troublesome tunes ol long ago—and there were times in Tauranga that pea would fail to describe—Mr Ghli proved himself to be, in every sense of the words, a kind neighbour and a good settler. Mr Gill was so confident of the future of Tauranga t hat he invested largely in landed property, intending to settle his eon —an only son, upon it ; bur, alasl fate decreed it otherwise. Poor Fred Gill, whilst defending his country s interests, was massacred ut Opepe, in the Taupo district. His death was a severe trial to Mr Gill, and the whole community mourned the loss of a promising and highly gifted youth. The Honorable the Native Minister soon became acquainted with Mr Gill’s superior capabilities, and removed him to a mudi higher and more responsible position at Wellington, where for the last three years ho has been residing. J iis recent visit here was officially connected wild: tiso duties of his appointment; bo expected to have remained amongst us a little longer, but urgent duties at head-quarters necessitated his immediate return. We hope at no very distant date to welcome Mr Gill back to Tauranga. The new dog collars, manufactured, we undors.anci, by some saddler ui Auckland, were ‘‘on v;ew during the Board meeting on Monday last:. The chairman and nil the members expressed their strong disapproval of the unsat isfaetory and unworkmanlike manner in which the order had been completed. The collars are simply disgraceful, and the collar maker, if we may judge from these specimens of his handiwork, a very talented leather spoiler ” indeed. The usual fortnightly meeting of the memb-rd of the Town Board was held ut the office on Monday morning. Present—All the members except Air Samuels. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and outward correspondence passed in due course. The account of the proprietors of the Bay of Plevti’ Times was passed for payment. Air Samuels was not present to bring lorward his motion regarding tho levels and drainage of To Papa, and the matter was consequently adjourned until nest meeting. The chairman thought it would be desirable to get tho gutters in the township drained, the present time ’•’■us tlie best, season of tho year for doing so. Air OiM.waj proposed, and Air McDonald seconded, “ luat tiie chairman be empowered to get the n.-c-ssary work performed forthwith.” On the mot ion or Air Conway, seconded by Air McDonald, dergeant Nadeu was requested to carry out the provisions ot the Dog Act for tbo present year. -Lhe meeting iUcn adjourned.
