CORRESPONDENCE.

THE COMING ELECTION.

Ws do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.

TO THE EDITOR. Sxa,—ln your paper of the 4th instant appears a letter from Mr Morrison accusing Mr Edgcumbe of “egotism,” and making unjust and unfair remarks on that gentleman. For instance, Mr Morrison states that Mr Edgcumbe at Maketu, in speaking of the Mechanics’ Institute in Tauranga altogether ignored the services of the other gentlemen connected with that Institute, Now Mr E. did nothing of the kind, he especially mentioned “Mr Ball and other gentlemen.” As to the Thames road, he did not say that the idea sprang from him, but that the petition from this district did emanate from himself. This is true, for Mr Edgcumbe drew up the petition, and he got a committee appointed to carry out such, and be certainly took a deal of trouble and pains in connection with such road and petition. With respect to the coach subsidy he stated distinctly at the Maketu meeting “ that he took a prominent part in obtaining such ”—very different to what Mr M. would wish the public to believe. If anyone will take the trouble to read through Mr Edgcumbe’s speech, as reported in your paper of the Ist instant they will find the above to be correct. I like to see fair play in an election contest, and 1 trust that Mr M,, when again quoting from a speech, will adhere strictly to the facts, and not attempt to distort them with the futile intention of benefiting his own candidate,— I am, &c., James T. Bbadeby. October 6, 1873.
