“ Our own ” correspondent’s report of the proceedings in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Opotiki, is unavoidably hsid over. The man Pennell, sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for drunkenness under the Vagrancy Act, was conveyed to Auckland by tbe last trip of the Southern Cross to undergo sentence at Mount Eden. This little fact should “ point a moral ” to habitual inebriates. By the bye, we should like to know what object is gained by sending “ short- sentenced ” men to Auckland. The Town Board would be very glad of a little cheap labour ; and surely prisoners would be more profitably employed in helping to make our roads than in studying practical geology under Captain Eyre. Of course, this is looking at it in a Tauranga point of view.
