RATHER CONTRADICTORY.
The following telegram lias been-received bv fis, which, in justice to Mr O. O. Davis and" Mr Mitchell, we hasten to publish :—" Make! u, August 29.—T0 Tiaiks newspaper, Tiiurangu.— I have ?cen you;- newspaper which states that Mr C. O. Davis and Mr Mitchell wore expelled from Koroma. Friend, this statement of' yours is false. Nothing of the kind occurred".—AkeKatera, sergeant of police, Itutovua." We have also to acknowledge receipt of the following letter from Roforua : [translation.] " To the Editor Bat op Plenty Times. " Friend, —Salutations to you. We have all seen your newspaper of the 23rd August, 3 873, about the words of C. O. Davis concerning the Arawa. Be calls us a big-mouthed tribe, and says send them back to Hawaiiki or to some very warm place (via., h-11). Now this is a word from all of us in answer to Davis's bad talk about us. That double faced man is like Judas and the devil. His work from of old has been to give bad advice to s -me of tine tribes of New Zealand. The Europeans are aware of the doings of that reptile, who crawls about over the land by day and by night, eontuumUy annoying and vexing us. Listen all of you. Wo do not want Davia.'and ■we have driven him far away to the place from whence he came. We will nor, have him back again, because we have fuuud out his deceitful ways. We are writing to Mr McLean and the Governor, to let them know the wickedness of this lizard without a tail. We think he had better be placed upon one of those islands, either Rurirua or Karewa, iu the midst of his dwn tribe ot scorpions. Oh friend, this is sufficient answer to his statements in your newspaper. Pleuse to insert this.
“ lirom your loving friends, “ ULNARS XB PtTKCTATtIA, “ Tt-MCKiiA TE CWMOHACJ, “ PaOKA TE ASIOIIAU. £< Ohinemutu, Rotorua, Augu-t 29, LSv3.”
