MB HANNON AND HIS MAIL CONTRACT.

*0 THE EDITOB.

Sib, I perceive by late Auckland papers that my name has been rather freely, and I think unfairly, bandied about in connection with the contract I bold under the Government for carrying mails between Tauranga and Taupo, and I desire, if you will allow mo, through your columns to explain matters as thoj/now stand in connection with that contract. >

I readily admit that according to the terms o£ the subsidy agreement it is provided that I must run a four-horse coach through to Nanier and I can only say that I have horses and all the necessary plant ready for immediate use. when certain portions of the road are fit for such traffic. At the present time I run a foar-liorse team along the hne wherever I consider it safe so to do, and for my own interest’s sake, independent of mv wish to carry out the contract in its integrity, the public may rest assured that I will, at the easiest possible moment, provide W-horso teams fotfc entire journey.

A portion of the road (although only a email portion) is unsafe for a four-horse coach to run, and for my part X would prefer to wait a littte ionger untd some alterations are made on the road, than endanger the lives 0 f passengers who tny charge. A certain coaching firm m Auckland are doing all they can to mjure me m the eyes of the Government, and it xa not difficult to guess the originators of the anonymous letters that have lately been pubhsbed m the Herald and the Star f but I would w f!o P 't bilC 110,1 , t 0 judge hastily in the matter, but to look upon these effusions as emanating from, the jealous mind of au unsuccessful tenderer. All I want, Mr Editor is fair play, which I feel sure will be accorded to—Your, &c..
