In various countries of Europe, in England and 5u America, the employment of giris in the telegraph department is a co*lrnon occurrence, and the system has been found from experience to work "'.veil. A private letter from Wellington received by last mail stales that in this particular New Zealand will probably bo not far behind in the march of progress, as the Government have determined to make the experiment at an early date.
The following telegram from Tauranga appears in the Auckland Star of the 18th instant : “ Teira has arrived from Rotorua. Previous telegrams are confirmed to the effect that Mr U. O. Davis and Mr Mitchell have been expelled by the Ngatiraukawa from the district, and they are now at Makotu. ”
The event of opening a land commission at Gisborne, Poverty Bay, nearly terminated in a serious native disturbance,- but the fracas was happily averted by the mterference of a good old chief named lhaka VVaanga, who undoubtedly deserves a substantial recognition for his services from the Government.
Owing to the promptitude of the Government Printer we are again in possession of another large batch of Parliamentary and other Government Papers. We have received Mr Mackay’s report upon the circumstances attending Sullivan’s murder in the Waikato. The report is most interesting, contains 29 pages, with maps, plans, &c., and is quite at the service of our subscribers.
