THE BAY OF PLENTY TIMES.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 1873.

" The spirit of the times shall tewh me speed." KING JOHN, ACT IV.

The telegrams which we published in our last, announcing the unanimity which existed amongst Auckland members of the Assembly in favour of a million loan for the province of Auckland, and the honourable mention of Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty as special localities for expenditure of the money, must have been read by all in the district with a thrill of pleasure and expectation. The mere suggestion of reclamation works in the Bay of Plenty will at once suggest extensive areas within Tauranga harbour which

might bo profitably reclaimed. Where, for examn? n ° mic( % reclamation be effected which 6> COtdd a immediately recoup the ori,Wn a V ° uld the work as an extension of + o< l at °t sea-wall, say from Captain T„ r i. be acK •the Monmouth Rediubt and the harbour to tho extremity rff loß '« sent wharf? Custom house telogragh office, &c., at a very considerable cost* n, *? plans for the work are in course k pf paration, and the site of the building nil time ago marked out. so that this mf fairly be supposed to be included under the head of public works. Anyhow, the telegraphic news comes from authentic sources, and may well be regarded as material for sincere congratulation.

t he GGverament may, at least,' be' credited with an expressed desire to assist Tauranga in the matter of immigration. A copy of the articles of agreement between the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Government, for the conveyance of immigrants and cargo to the colony,” is before us. i-he documents afford much valuable information on the subject, and, as a schedule, we find published the draft of a cablegram forwarded to Dr. Deatherston the A gent-General at home. From this we gainer that the former limitation of one ship per month has been withdrawn. The company must despatch ships on six weeks notice. Minimum number of adults afih 1 150 ’ maximum, 400; rate, £1- l° s - One ship to -Napier and ose to Caubanga, if possible, with an extra allowance of £2 to the company per statute

IIOMAS ® T73SELL > as agent for the New Zealand Government at Washington, has, we are delighted to hear, effected arrangements for a postal service between San Francisco and this colony. The mere fact of the negotiation is only announced at present, but we may expect details of the contract very shortly. It is most gratifying to learn that direct communication with San Francisco and New Zealand 7s likely to be re-established at an early date.
