Thursday, July 3. I am informed Messrs Simpson tire pushing their work on the Ormond and Poverty Bay Road with rapidity. They have over 20 men employed on this end of it. About, 17 miles are completed, and they are now entering heavy bush country. On leaving the W aihoa the road leads across the range, through the Waiopu valley into the Tahora valley, crossing the dividing range in the Whitikail valley, thence through undulating country to the Motu river. The Ormond end h»a been sublet to a parly of Karopeans, who expect to be through in about four months.

The quarterly inspection parade of the J3aj of Plenty Volunteer Cavalry and the Rangers took place on Saturday. There was a full attendance of members of both corps. The men were inspected by Sub-Inspector Sundry, who expressed himself satisfied with the neat appearance of the men, and complimented them on the cleanliness of the arms in their possession. The Hub-inspector then put them through a number of movements, .which were very creditably’ performed. June 81. The cutter Ron arrived from Auckland with 14,000ffc timber, to the order of Mr James Busst. 'The Providence left for the coast ; Two Brothers for Whakafane ; the Ratio cleared for Tauranga with lull cargo of produce during the week. The cutter Don ia loading produce for Auckland.
