VOLUNTEERING MATTERS.

TO THE EBXTOK. Sib,-- j ho writer of your (communicated) report of the meeting of the Volunteers on Saturday jasi, winds up with very valourous sentiments as to the readiness of the Volunteers to go bo the Bout. I must have boon very deaf at that meeting, for 1 heard nothing so enthusiastic as your contributor states. There are also two led tera—-one from “ A Volunteer.- the other from In intending Volunteer”— reflecting upon the competency” of the officers. Ido nob think either of these parties are competent to judge, and if they will only give their names, wo shall be able to see whether they are competent to ban die a nfle or undergo the fatigue of a New Zealand campaign. I think they will turn oat. . more for the drawing room. Captain IS orns nnd Mr Morrison have both seen service in the field, and both them and myself and a. few others were told for a very dangerous and hazardous duty, through a very hostile country, and which was done, wo having comparatively very unserviceable rifles at the' time. I pre fer peace so long as it can bo maintained with honour to ourselves j but should war unhappily break out, I am ready to again take the field, and under the present officers, feeling quite sure they will not flinch from their duty.—l am, &c., xr on to*ro James T. Bbaui,et. May 30, 1873.
