Tha Empire Variety Troupe are expected to strife by the Southern Cross, due here this evening. In our account of the death of Mr David Graham and the Masonic honours paid to his remains, we omitted to mention that great credit is due to Mr John Chadwick for the excellent manner in which he oond acted all the arrangements previous to handing over the body to the Masons. An unanimous vote of thanks was deservedly accorded to Mr Chrdwick from the Masonic body, in appreciation of the respect paid by him to the memory of a departed brother. We are pleased to learn that Mr A, G. Oldfield, schoolmaster at the Native School, Whareroa, has received an advance of salary. It is the intention of the committee of the Mechanics’ Institute to give the next entertainment on Friday, 6th June next. The first part of the programme will be a lecture by the Rev Mr Jordan, and the second part will consist of songs and glees by old and new amateurs. The Southern Cross made a splendid run to lackland. She left the wharf, Tauranga, at 12 noon on Friday last, and arrived in Auckland at two o'clock the following morning—thus doing the passage in 14 hours.
