NOTES FROM ROTORUA.
Messrs Scott and Leonard, the successful contractors for laying the telegraph wire between here and Taupo, are getting on fast. They commenced Ft at at the Taupo end. A petition has been sent by the Ngatiraukawa to the Government, requesting that the telegraph office should be removed from Te Ngae to Chinemutn, and erected on a section of land they have given to the Government for the purpose. This would be on the direct road between Taumnga and Napier. 8 The dispute between Mr Jordan and some of the natives is likely soon to be settled, as 1 understand they have received a further sum of £lO on account. The natives here are likely soon to lease large blocks of land for sheep and cattle runs. It is said a well known Otago capitalist wi'l nrobablv be the first successful holder.' * i-aptai* Hair’s natives are getting on rapidly with the approaches to the bridges at Niho o te Kiore. Th is one of the best bridge son the line. Mr Bennett, of Chin emu tu, has been promised a supply of trout for th© streams that flow into Rotorua. Should they thrive, another Inducement may hereafter be held out to visitors. Poor David Graham I So he has gone to that bourne from which no traveller o’er returns. Although resident here only for a short time previous to his sudden death, he contrived to himself a prime favourite in the district especially among our sable friends. Hit portly form and somewhat pompous manner seemed to act as charms on the Maoris, and he wag voted a great Rangatira, If he had lived he would have possessed considerable influence with the Maoris and who knows, now that we appear to be on the eve of another rebellion, might have proved himself a true friend to both races in the time of trouble ; but Providence hag willed it otherwise* doubtless for some good purpose of Hig oW Peace to his ashes.
