RESIGNATION OF MR S. CLARKE
Ws have been requested to publish the following correspondence with reference to the -resignation of Mr W. L. Clarke S 8. L. Clarke, Bsq. >*» Sir,—We notice with feelings of regret your letter in this morning’s paper, signifying your intention of resigning your position as one of the School Committee elected ou Monday last. Having been publicly elected by the votes of the householders, and at the time' accepting the trust, we think, in justice to those gentlemen who supported you, that you should not resign, as the very fact of your again receiving the support of the public in school matters is a convincing proof that your services have been appreciated. And besides, should you do so, the election of a gentleman to serve in your place necessitates what might perhaps be considered an invidious or arbitrary assumption of discrimination on the part of the remaining members of the committee. UnCer these circumstances we, the undersigned members of the School Committee, beg you%vill re-consider your decision, and not forward your intended resignation. J H. L. Sheet, R. Kies:, J. Con wax, ani> i£. M. EiJGcajyrßE, r, „ . , _ , Tauranga, May 7, 1873. Cape, fekeeb and Gentlemen of School Committee. Gentlemen, —The intimation in this morning’s paper of my intended resignation as member of the District School Committee having drawn forth a letter unanimously signed, I feel that I cannot do otherwise than accede to the request therein contained and remain on the committee especially as you have also the trouble to wait on me by deputation on this very inclement night. All this, and the unsolicited votes of householders which put me in office, certainly afford me a flattering, if not a deserved, proof of appreciation. It would, therefore, be ignoble ou my part to carry out my announced intention of resigning, considering the anomalous position in which you would feel yourselves placed. As you did not request my reasons for the course I took, it is unnecessary to state them. I am, &c., S. L. CX-AEEK.
