PUBLIC MEETING. We are indebted to Air Bodeil for the following report of on impromptu meeting held after parade, at the Masonic Hotel, on the 27th instant. There was no notice given, or our reporter would have been present. The meeting took place, we understand, for the purpose of petitioning the Defence Minister to discontinue the parades of the settlers of iauranga, who are at present ail called upon to attend under terms of the Militia A ct. Mr Bodeil occupi ;d the chair, and brief! j explained the objects in view. After some discussion. Mr J. Maxwell moved, “That the settlers of Tauranga petition the Defence Minister to discontinue the parades at present compulsory under the Militia Act.” Seconded by Mr F. George, and curried, Mr McDonald referred to the inconvenience himself and others were subject to on parade days, haring <o close their places of business. Mr F. George drew the attention of the meeting to a settler who had had to leave his thrashing machine and walk four miles to attend parade that day, together with four men in his employ He considered the Volunteers were sufficient for all purposes under existing circumstances. The settlers could bo called out at one hour’s notice wh*-n required. Mr Martin proposed, “That acommi-tee of five be appointed to draw up a memorial, and to obtain the signature of tesiuenta.”—oeconded by Mr Maxwell, and craned. Messrs iiodeh. Maxwell, •*’.
