MR. COMMISSIONER CLARKE’S INLAND TRIP.
Mil Commissioner Clarke and party returned to Tauranga on Monday evening last.. Mr Clarke arrived at Taheke, notoiti, on the 11th M arch, the day appointed for hearing a lard dispute, which at one time appeared to assume a serious aspect. At the request of the natives, the korero was adjourned until the following day. In the meantime Mr Clarke went across the bay to examine the Maori school, which is under the care of Major Wood. The Commissioner has requested us to mention that he has ranch pleasure in giving his testimony to the zeal which Major Wood has manifested in hie duties, and he considers that the scholars have made p.aiseworthy progress, Major Wood, we learn, is a great favourite among the natives, and his asrvk 3 are highly appreciated. On the following day Mr Clarke. “ went into ” the dispute, allowing both parties to choose chiefs t > assist in arriving at a lair judgment. The hearing lasted two days, and on the evening of the second day the arbitra- ' rs, after a long and patient discussion, decided that it would be improper to give a decision without further evidence, inasmuch as the matter would involve a great number of similar claims. The arbitrators, therefore, suggested that the disputants should consent to hand over the whole of the disputed blocks to be f * arbitral d ” upon, and named the month of May as a convemnn' time. The disputants will take time to con er the matter. Ou Ike 1-Uh the Cocnrah-
