BAY OF PLENTY TIMES.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1873.

“ The spirit of the times shall teach me speed.’ 1 KING JOHN, ACT 17.

W E find from advertisements in the Napier papers that two Banks are about establishing branches at Gisborne, in Poverty Bay, evidently proving that Gisborne is becoming a flourishing settlemeut. It is now some years since the necessity of a branch Bank at Tauranga was discussed by the inhabitants, but doubtless the Bank authorities did not then consider our town offered sufficient inducements. They, however, we believe, purchased a section in a convenient position, and we trust that now every small town is getting its Bank, Tauranga may not be left out. We do not look upon a Bank as merely an institution established for the benefit of the public; it offers an opportunity of investment to men of capital, whereby they hope to secure a good interest for their money: and banking, like any other business, requires strict attention and pushing to . make it' pay. That it is looked upon as \ remunerative is proved by the establishment from time to time of fresh companies, and the balance-sheets ot various existing establishments, which show a good dividend. To meet the increasing requirements of the colony, the “ National Bank ot New Zealand ” has been just started. fao promoters appear to have every confidence in its success, and if those Banks already established and doing a fair ness wish to hold their own, it; will be necessary for them to oiler the samo facilities for transacting business a now company is Jike.lv to do by increasing their offices or brandies. Tauranga i» in easy communication with Nateiu, Matata, Opotiki, ami inland sc-tilmnents. A. great deal of business is clone a.ong the coast, and it is a, well-known “ that sometimes there is no moneyyim , “xervt in the share of cheques ; bur tais

iT only tuie inconvenience merchants have to transmit largo sums from time to time to their Rank in Auckland, an inconvenient and dangerous system, as the j cgs of a cutter, or small boat, might auv dav materially a {feet the interests of a man in business. We hope some Bank will consider it worth their while to establish a branch hero at an early date, and place Tauranga on an equality with some of its sister settlements.
