IN LAUD EM VITAS RUSTIOJE. 1. I dearly love the country. In summer bravery dressed, The merry birds, the peaceful herds. The flowers—and all tho rest. That is, the feelings I express In rhyme are always such ; But, practically, I confess I don’t admire it much. IX. No doubt it’s very pleasant, Some bright and balmy day. Stretched on the grass, an hour ,to pass In dreamy thought away ; But, really, with such blissful ease It, greatly interferes To have a swarm of ilios and best All buzzing round your ears. in. Ten thousand smiling meadows With Nature’s gems arc bright; Primroses pale soft dews exhale, Tne hawthorn blossoms white ; And very sweet it was to : A floral wreath to pull, But, roaming free, there’s sure to bo At least one rabid bull. XV. I thought that rustic maidens Wore light as mountain-fays, And as they strayed along the glade, Kept chanting joyous lays; But those that cross my pathway here Have voices far from sweet.. They wear black stockings, and, oh dear ! 1 never saw such feet. V. And, then, the rustic diet. Though wholesome, 1 suppose, For, bless my eyes ! to what a size Your cheerful bumpkin grows !- A round of ham-and-eggs, you see.
