THE MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE.
A committee meeting of the Mechanics’ Institute was held on the evening of Thursday, the 6th February. A letter was read which had been received from the Under-Secretary for Defence in reply to one sent by Captain Tunka (President) on behalf of the committee to the Hon Mr McLean, applying for a lease of the land upon which the reading room now stands, as at present it is held only by permission, and three months notice can at any time be given. The Uuder-Sscretary informed Captain Tanks, however, that Mr McLean ‘‘is unable to accede to the request of the committee ; and that the conditions upon which the temporary use of the land was granted must be adhered to.” A letter from Mr Lusk (Provincial Secretary) was also read, in which that gentleman informs the President, in reply to an application for a grant of books out, of the funds set aside for the purpose by the Provincial Council. *' that the list of hooks furnished by Mr Dougina (on the part of the Institute (oaa been submitted to tire Library Committee of the Provincial Council for their approval, and will no doubt receive early sttention.’’ It was also decided at the meeting that Mr 'Walmesiey (librarian) should be instructed to enforce bye law b T o. 6of the Institute, which orders that members retaining books over the period allowed (7 or 14 days, according to the work) shad be lined at the rate of 2d per diem for any time over such period. The action in this matter is rendered necessary on account of some members retaining books much longer than permitted, which prevents their proper cirouja* tion amongst subscribers.
