GOVERNMENT TIMBER.
Ik accordance with announcement, a meeting of ex-Waikato men and others interested in the “timber question” was held at Rennet's hotel on Saturday afternoon last. Mr Bradley occupied the chair. Mr Waltnsley and the Chairman, as members of the deputation who had waited upon the Hon the Defence Minister touching the supply of timber to thorn in the district entitled to it, explained the result of their mission in a brief but businesslike manner. Several gentlemen present mentioned that their mines not appearing on the list of distribution, they had been refused their allowance of timber, anti a conversational discussion ensued thereon. The Chairman read some correspondence on the subject which had taken piece between the authorities and Mum If regarding the original claims ; and was of opinion that the Government would, upon application, immediately order ever) body entitled to receive their quantum. Captain Tanks felt sure there was a mistake in the matter, and proposed, “ That a list of those who had not received their timber be forwarded to the authorities through Major Roberts.” Carried unanimously. It was then proposed by Mr Robinson, jun., and seconded by Mr Robinson, “ That the Chairman be requested to draw up the list and a petition, the same to be left at the Mechanics’ Institute for signatures.” After a cordial vote of thanks to the Chairman for the active part he had taken for the common good, the meeting separated.
