The firstday's athleti c sport* were confined almost entirely to Captain Preece s men, there being >no white men able to compete success fully against : them* s Hoani Pari won the 100 yard*, 400 yard*, 450 yard* hurdle race, and the 250 yards heavy marching order, rThe eaclr rape wm,i*d n by Ngapubi, and jLwa*. tenant Bluett a good second. Captain Preece was a strong favourite for this race, but unfortunately fell just as he was going to'Xnake the running. The greasy tailed pig took to. the river, and there was ignoroinously drowned by bis pursuers. A swimming match concluded 'the day a sports, won by Rangi Kaheke, who took th# prize last year. On Saturday fell adjourned to the race course, which after the rain was in fine order. The Hurdle Race brought eight to the post—won by Porangi, Stranger 2nd. A couple of harmless “ spills ” helped to keep the fun up, the hurdles being real stiff ones-aft. Gin. high. C’k® , alf * mile f ac o w»i ‘ w#n by Maria, the mile by Gmgarbeer, and the Trotting Race by Mr Macpherson’s Butcher, after a good tussle with a Maori horse. The Cup brought ten to the scratch, and it took Pakeha all his time’ to boat Xaki (second). Lady’s Race, as usual, was one of the best of the day, and was taken byLieutenant Way’s T. K , most artistically steered uy Bhza Hapanui. The Pony Race was a gift to Mr Kelly s bcotoh Kate, the rest nowhere, j and the Consolation, won by Tikanui, concluded a good day’s .racing.. There were no accidents; though a Maori' who galloped into a potato© pit, was forced to leaye bis horse there with a broken neck. I hope h© was gratified that it was’nt his own: The arraugemeuts under the able management of the Hon. Sec.
