Mr IJoug’as moved, “ That this Council la of opinion that the opening of a road from Shortland to the East Coast, by wav of Ohinemuri, wou'd bo of very great advantage to the province j and that his Honor the Superintendent be requested to use his influence with the General Government in reference to tho foregoing project, with a view to having such road constructed out of the monies available for such purposes, under the Immigration and Public Works Loan.” lie had consulted Mr Mackay relative to the probable opposition from the natives, and he had told him that there would not be any difficulty in that respect. Mr W. Kelly seconded the motion ; in conjunction with Mr C. O’Neill and other Auckland members he had brought the necessity of this work before the attention of the General Government, who stated they would be prepared to go on with it as Boon as the natives would allow. He believed the Superintendent was in favour of the road being carried through. Mr Mitchell believed there was no substantial objection on the part of the natives to the road. He was glad to hear that the Superintendent was favourable to tho work, but, from the way in which ho had treated resolutions for tho carrying out of other works in his (Mr Mitchell’s) district, he very much feared very little would result from his exertions. Mr Sheehan said tho Government would assist es far as they possibly could in the carrying out of the resolution. Motion agreed to.
