SCANDAL.
Tub most cruel uml most sucked persecution is that of words—words spoken or printed. It wounds tho heart, defames the character, and kills tlio reputation. A good man may bo happy in tho deepest poverty ; and it' he is put to death no outers into rest, and is lot* ever beyond tho reach of harm. But who can escape from tho misery produced by falsa and''cruel words ? Friends look nt you askance; you are avoided by people who sought your presence-and delighted iu your society ; and men by their coldness seem to say, ‘‘ You are found out at. last!” There was a kind of rough ami rugged manliness in tho oldfashioned persecutions ending iu martyrdom : it met its victim face to fare, and said, “ Might is right; lam stronger than you, and therefore you shall perish.” But the author of is generally anonymous. Like some cowardly spirit of evil, ho wraps himself in a cloud uf mystery, and then pours forth his poisoned arrows upon you.
