NAVY LEAGUE
NEW CLUB ROOMS
OPENING CEREMONY
The work of the Navy League was eulogised yesterday when a ceremony was held to open its new club rooms and work-centre at Elliott Street.
The president of the league, Commander C. H. T. Palmer, who presided, welcomed the visitors. He said that the new club rooms would fill a long-felt want, and the work of the ladies' committee would be carried on more expeditiously to provide comforts and parcels for naval personnel.
The Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. praised the work of the Navy League and said that it was unfortunate that greater publicity could not be given to its efforts. He was pleased that the rooms had been established, as they wanted places where contacts could be made with servicemen.
Captain D. A. Bingley, R.N., paid a tribute to the work of the league, which, he said, was greatly appreciated by the navy. They were under a debt of gratitude to Mr. J. Marsden Caughey for providing the rooms, and to Mr. H. T. Goldie for his part in providing furniture. He then formally declared the club rooms and work-centre open.
Mrs. R. G. Coats thanked the speakers, and the rooms were dedicated and blessed by Canon Coats.
