WAR WORKERS
HOLIDAY CAMPS SCHEME UNION SUBSIDISES COST Week-end holiday camps conducted by the Physical Welfare branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, for war workers, have the support of both employers and unions. Some recent camps have been paid for by employers, who realise the value of these breaks from the monotony and strain of mass production tasks and long hours. Mr. A. S. Herring, secretary of the Clerical Workers' Union, has announced that his union has decided to subsidise the cost of a camp for clerical workers engaged in war tasks, to be held at Mairangi Bay this week-end.
The fact that both employers and unions endorse the work being undertaken by officers of the Department of Internal Affairs in furtherance of the policy laid down by the Minister <?f Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, indicates the benefits derived by this means, both from the point of view of increased production and the physical welfare of the workers. Miss G. M. Gebbie and Mr. J. C. Bonham, officers in charge of physical welfare work in Auckland, have been assisted at each of these camps by committees representing the girls attending, and report that this arrangement has been proved of great value. Similar holiday camps will be conducted from time to time during the summer months.
