SECOND FRONT
MATTER FOR LEADERS "INVASION MUST SUCCEED" (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. "There is at the moment a clamour for a second front. We all want to see a second front, and are longing for the day when we can, with our allies, attack our enemies who are ravaging the countries which have been overrun," said the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall, when speaking at the Wellington branch of the Overseas League.
"The moment for such an operation is not for you or me to choose; it is a matter of the highest strategy and must be decided by our chosen leaders, who know all the facts. It is disloyal to them to confuse the issue, and add to their burdens. We all want to help the gallant Russians, whose heroism has inspired us. and whose present sufferings appal us. but a mere invasion of Europe would not help them. It must be a successful invasion, and who but our leaders can judge how and when a successful invasion can be launched. Public clamour can only result in greater preparations bv our enemies, which must mean unnecessary casualties when an invasion is made."
