WIFE OR MOTHER
Fully 70 years ago I heard my male forbear frequently remark, "Whatever business is run by a Government is badly run." For example, a very dear lady friend, wishing to accompany her soldier son on hlsforthcoming leave on a trip to the Chateau Tongariro, requested me to inquire particulars at the Government Tourist Bureau. I received the astonishing information that a soldier would be permitted to travel to the Chateau with his wife, but not with his mother! Since, in this case, the mother looks almost as youthful as her soldier son, I suggested to her to book in their correct names without declaring that they were husband and wife; then, if the soldier was asked, "Is this lady vour wife?" he could reply, "I hope'l shall get one as good." It would be, to my mind, highly beneficial if young soldiers could spend their leave with their mothers. A young soldier friend (overlooking mv writing), remarked, "You don't sav!"
