CUP CANDIDATE Symbol, which has brought herself into discussions for the Winter Cup by her win on Saturday, had won only once previously this season, a sprint at Riverton at Easter. Symbol, a rising five-year-old mare by Gascony from Symballo, is owned by Miss J. Edgar Jones, and is trained at Washdyke by E. J. Ellis. She was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry and is a sister to Symcony and half-sister to The Crooner, both good gallopers. She is also closely related to Catalogue and Cylinder. Symbol, which cost her owner 120gs at the National sales, has not been overraced. She started twice as a two-year-old without success, but last season won her first three races on end, being then raced by her lessor, C. C. McCarthy, of Riccarton, who had a high opinion of her at that time. FORM AT WASHDYKE At the South Canterbury Hunt meeting last year Treasurer was the winner of the Pentlow Hack, while Boloyna and St. Cloud ran second and third in the Claremont Handicap. Treasurer and St. Cloud were both winners at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and later the Winter Cup resulted: Treasurer 1, Boloyna 2, St. Cloud 3, so that the form worked out well from those two hunt meetings. On Saturday Symbol repeated St. Cloud's performance in the Claremont Handicap, and is engaged at the hunt meeting in the Brabazon Handicap and in the Cup, as also is Fleet Street. Compeer also has the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Treasurer in the same events. NOT IN NATIONAL Recollection, the winner of the South Canterbury Steeplechase, is not in the National, but he is in the Homeby Steeples at the hunt meeting. This was his first success as a steeplechaser, though he has had experience. As a hurdler he was good, but unsoundness has troubled him in the past. He has only to keep going to win more over country, for he has been schooling very well at Riccarton. The second and third horses, Gay Boa and Anglo French, are both in the National. Gay Boa won this race at Washdyke last year, but did not run at the hunt meeting or in the National, and in his only start there finished second to Hyderabad in the Beaufort Steeples. WALLY BAGBY IN JAPANESE HANDS Among several jockeys included in the civilian population trapped in Singapore when the Japanese swept through Malaya and captured the island fortress was the former Wairarapa resident, W. S. Bagby. Many Australians were also captured. This news comes from Melbourne, where two Australians, Steve Dodd and George Woods, who won the King's Cup on Roseburn in 1931, recently returned. They stated that they did not know what became of their comrades, and no news has been received of them in Australia. % ■ A LIKELY IMPROVER The rising three-year-old Killfast, by Mr. Standfast—Mahkill, has done well throughout the winter. He is now being given a bit of road work by his owner, J. D. Kemp, and is thriving on. it. Killfast was not raced until late in the season, and is likely to show a good deal of improvement next summer. SON OF GAY BLONDE Although Lo Zin failed to earn any money during the current term, more is sure to be heard of the son of Lo Zingaro and Gay Blonde. This fellow looks very bright and healthy, while he revealed sufficient speed in his races to warrant his future being favourably regarded. J. Chisholm has taken Lo Zin along very quietly and is likely to be rewarded later on. ADDITION TO TEAM A recent addition to R. Arnott's team is Kiatere Maati, the rising three-year-old by Mr. Standfast—Princess March. This gelding was in the money several times when trained by D. J. Burgess at Takanini, and is a likely one to win a maiden event during the spring meetings. IN GOOD FETTLE j The stable-mates Landveyor and Bronzo are both wintering well and are a useful pair for D. Arnott to commence the new season with. Judged by their condition, both these geldings are likely to extend their winnings before the new season is very far advanced. RESUMED WORK Three late additions to the track workers at Ellerslie are Long Reign, The Pacifist, and Beaucoup. They have just been taken up after a holiday, and though a bit "rough" in the coat, no fault can be found with their condition. RETURNED TO OWNER Renarde did not stand up to her racing in the North Island, and C. C. McCarthy has sent her back to her North Canterbury owner, Mrs. G. L. Rutherford, to spell. Renarde is on the small side, and does not possess a good constitution. AUSTRALIAN HURDLES MELBOURNE. July 28. Final acceptors for the Australian Hurdles of £1200. about three miles, to be run at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club meeting on Saturday, are:—Saul, Isambard. Harley. David Spear. Con Devon. Browser. Dominex, Friardoon. Lord Jevington. Vines. Virile.
