national survey DUTIES OF THE COUNCIL <O C.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Production, Mr. Poison, has met the representatives of district production councils in the North Island and will discuss the seasona 1 production programme with the South Island organisations this week A greatly expanded output in many lines of farming is needed, and the broad outlines are being explained to the district, production councils in a memoranda now being circulated by the National Council of Primary Production.
If is .suggested that each district council should at once make a survey of conditions with the object of inducing owners to increase their production of such farm products as the National Council and the Department recommend, or which the local organisation believes to be essential. It is pointed out that if a survey is made of the farms, their equipment and the labour required for various crops, it might be possible to arrange for farm machinery to bo used on more than one farm, and for the available labour to be similarly distributed. Prices For Surplus In the event of a surplus beyond the absorption capacity of the'civil and military population, the balance, states the circular, will be purchased at approved prices, which will be fixed later by the Marketing Department.
In view of the swing back from cheese to butter, greater numbers of pigs can he fattened, and an important activity of production councils will be to see that sufficient grain is grown for feeding purposes. Included in the duties of these councils will probably be the supervision of farms owned by soldiers now overseas, and as the councils now have finance avrilable, they are to be encouraged tc take up this responsibility. Among other duties will be plans regarding housing of groups of workers, methods of rationing such necessities as wire fo J overcoming transport difficulties by co-operative methods, and the conservation of jute bags, which may be valuable and scarce In some districts maize production vegetable growing and the production of sweet potatoes must be Increased, states the official memoranda. and nay and chaff may be required in large quantities, as well as grass and clover seeds
