HONEST TRUSTEESHIP
British-American Opportunities In The West Indies JOINT RESPONSIBILITY British Official Wireless Rec. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, July 28. British and American co-operation in the development of the West Indies was suggested by Mr. J. G. Winant, United States Ambassador to Britain, in an address to the Royal Empire Society. He said that there had for some time been an opportunity for the two countries to join together in a common effort to develop a policy that would give security to the peoples who live in the Atlantic islands off the coast of the Americas. In several instances, there was a certain degree of joint responsibility, because of the LeaseLend agreements, and without interference with Sovereign rights.
He believed that they could well afford to carry forward many of the recommendations of the Tassig Report and the British West Indian recommendations published in 1940. He believed, too, that much could be done within the area to increase war production, to do justice to those involved and to compel the recognition of honest trusteeship, both here and in the United States.
