W. J. BROUGHTON ON TOP FOR FIFTH TIME

W. J. Broughton is New Zealand's champion Jockey for the fifth time. He has ridden the winners of 44 races this season, and no doubt his total would have been greater had he been in action all the year. Broughton, who served his apprenticeship with G. W. New, of Awapuni, first headed the list in 193G-37 with a total of 63 winners. His other vears at the top were 1938-39 (80), 1939-40 (59), 1940-41 (79), and the present season (44). Nearest to Broughton this year are P. Spratt, with 35 wins, and D. Redstone, with 34. Redstone, one of the best apprentices of recent years, has been tutored by L. G. Morris, formerly a leading rider, and has successfully mixed steeplechasing with flat race riding.
