HIT ON HEAD
TAXI MAN ASSAULTED
SUSPECT ARRESTED After being struck on the head allegedly with an iron bar in his car in Herne Bay last night, a taxi driver, Mr. Cyril Frank Ernest Bartrum,' climbed over into the rear seat grappled with his assailant and called loudly for help. Nearby residents were quickly on the scene and overpowered a man, who a married man. aged 26, of Lingarth Street Remuera had a nasty cut on the head. After the wound was stitched he was able to S °Shortfy after 8.30 last night a man entered Mr. Bartrum's cab which was on the Victoria Street West stand, and asked to be driven to Wallace Street, Herne Bay. On arrival at the bottom of Wallace Street, it is alleged that the man, who was in the rear seat, struck Mr. Bartrum a blow on the head with what was alleged to be a bar of iron. Despite his severe wound, Mr. Bartrum climbed into the rear compartment and closed with his passenger. As he held the man he called loudly for help. Several persons were quickly on the scene. One obtained a long length of rope and with assistance trussed up the man securely. „ , , . The police were notified, and when Detective-Sergeant O. Power and Detective W. H. Turgis arrived on the scene they found Mr. Bartrum bleeding profusely in one corner of the rear compartment, and the suspected assailant, bound up with rope, his feet and hands tied together in the other.
