MEDICAL STAFF I REMARKS RESENTED BOARD UPHOLDS CHAIRMAN 1 A letter from the resident medical I staff was read at the Hospital Board i meeting last night, stating that a . serious slur had been cast on them • by a reported statement by the board's chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, in respect to deaths under anaesthetics at the hospital, and requiring the chairman to make a : public apology in both daily papers and to the resident medical staff, such apology to be submitted to them for approval before publication. i Mr. Moody said it was the duty of the board to see that the people in its institutions were given the best attention possible, and it had to , undertake the necessary improvements to benefit the sick public. ■ Arrangements had to be made to have certain matters remedied, and ; there was nothing personal about it. The resident medical staff had not in any way had a slur cast upon it. I He read a statement he made, published in the Star, showing that he had commended the ability of the staff. But, in view of investigations made by the complaints committee it was found necessary to have the anaesthetics department properly adjusted, and the board had taken 1 the course of appointing Dr. G. S. Hudson, an experienced anaethetist, to take charge of the department. The speaker felt that the resident i medical staff had been unfortunate in the tone of their letter, which, he thought, might Jiave been inspired, i He did not desiiNe to say more, but would move that the letter be received and the resident medical i staff be advised that the positioi • was made clear by the chairman in a statement published in the Star on ' July 15. Mr. J. said he didn't blame the chairman, but he blamed the board. He moved an amendment that the board expressed regret that there had been a misunderstanding. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr. V. M. Tracey pointed out that the chairman spoke only as the mouthpiece of the board, and did ' not express a personal opinion when he referred to deaths under anaesthesia. i Mrs. M. Dreaver declared that the public had been given confidence by the strong stand taken by the chairman, and by having these matters taken in open meeting instead of in , committee. After other members had sup- ! ported the chairman's action, Mr. J. V. Macky said that the members must know that dissatisfaction was rampant among the medical and nursing staff. He did not agree with Mrs. Dreaver, and felt that the board was not meeting the position in the right way by so much publicity. He thought this dissatisfaction could be removed by treating such business with less publicity. The motion was carried, Mr. Guiniven dissenting.
