NATIONAL COUNCIL
At yesterday's meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, over which the president. Miss L. V. Langsford, presided, the council unanimously agreed that women should be appointed to the local industrial manpower committees in view of the numbers of women brought under their jurisdiction by the calling up of the first age groups. At the same time appreciation was expressed of the work done by voluntary helpers associated with the manpower committees.
The council expressed its support of the action of the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, in asking for the provision of an adequate number of uniformed policewomen for Auckland with the same powers as male members of the police force.
Gratification at the culmination of their efforts to secure for women the right to serve on juries in the presentation of the Women Jurors Bill by Mrs. M. M. Dreaver, M.P., was expressed by members. Although the bill had been held up because it involved an appropriation, members hoped that it would be reintroduced in the near future as a Government measure.
