TOBACCO AND ITS ACCESSORIES
Having recently arrived in New Zealand from overseas. I find a peculiar state of affairs exists in the matter of making occasional purchases of tobacco, matches and cigarette papers from local tobacconists. Sometimes I am courteously advised, at others the "take it or leave it" attitude is adopted that if a box of matches is required the customer must also purchase some tobacco or cigarettes! Some tobacconists even go as far as refusing to sell a packet of cigarette papers unless some tobacco is bought, surely this is a matter requiring some control? Should this principle be carried into general practice a customer requiring a pair of socks may be compelled to purchase shoes. a woman seeking some lipstick I P a J have to buy some face powder. And so on ad infinitum. Practices such as these can scarcely be classed under the heading of fair trading! W. C. VALENTINE.
