MAJOR TWEEDY'S ABSENCE FURTHER LEAVE DECLINED (P A.) TIMARU, this day. The Timaru Borcugh Council tonight declined by four votes to three to grant a further extension of leave to the Mayor, Major W. G. Tweedy who is serving as a Red Cross Commissioner for New Zealand overseas. This means a Mayoral election. When Major Tweedy left Timaru he applied fcr leave for the remainder of his term, the council granting six months' leave. Mr. P. B. Foote. the deputy-Mayor, became actingMayor, Mrs. Tweedy continuing as Mayoress. The six months' period expired some time ago, and Major Tweedy has now been absent without leave for three meetings. After next meeting he forfeits his seat. Mr. Foote took no part in the debate, but after the council had made its decision he announced his intention of contesting the Mayoralty.
