WASTE MATERIAL

RUBBER AND PAPER

APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC

Stating that New Zealand needed every ounce of rubber which could be obtained, the acting-Prime Minister Mr. Sullivan, made a strong appeal in a broadcast address last night. He said that the conservation of supplies, and the prevention of unnecessary usage, was largely i the hands of the Government, but the salvaging of every scrap ot available waste rested with tne people. , , , Mr. Sullivan pointed out that over 90 per cent of the world s raw rubber was now in enemy hands, and expressed the Governments gratitude for the co-operation of the retail motor-trade, which had offered every facility for storing rubber. All old rubber was needed, and should be sent to the nearest delivery point. All the retail motor trade businesses were authorised to accept contributions. The dairy industry was also co-operating, and all dairy factories were authorised collecting points. Mr. Sullivan stressed the urgent need of paper, and said that the New Zealand mills could repulp and refabric 16,000 tons a year. Bales of waste paper could be exported to help Australia. He advised people to take small parcels of paper with them when they went to town, and deposit them at the depot, or to call up a headmaster in their neighbourhood, and boys would be sent to collect.
