STREET INTERLUDE
HYDRAULIC OUTBURST
SMALL BOYS GATHER
The proverbial small boys who never fail to materialise from nowhere in particular were immediately on the scene and had a thoroughly enjoyable time getting themselves wet when a water spout from a punctured service pipe broke loose under a city shop verandah this morning.
Workmen excavating in the footEath for a gas pipe outside Queen treet premises opposite the Town Hall apparently dislodged a rusted cap from a four-inch water pipe, releasing a powerful spout of water which literally hit the roof of the verandah, where it set up a lively hydraulic tune on the tin lining and gaily drenched everything, including small boys, within yards around, until a flying gang of City Council experts arrived and quickly subdued it.
Then the small boys, apparently abandoning any lingering expectation that someone might be drowned or a shop or two completely wrecked by the incipient deluge, faded away, presumably to some more promising scene of excitement.
