TO MEET ARMY NEEDS
DEPARTMENT BUYS FARMS (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Friday. To prevent a repetition of last year's problem, when vegetables were in short supply and prices were high, the Department of Agriculture has undertaken the production of vegetables for the armed forces to enable commercial growers to provide for civilian needs in the Whangarei district. The Department has acquired an area of 130 acres in the Maunu district and 30 acres at Ngararatunua, and no time is being lost in the preparations, the aim being to grow vegetables as quickly as possible. 1 hirty acres so far have been broken up and at the present time cabbages and cauliflowers were being planted i le , nur ? ery beds have be en Prepared lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower plants. ™? pe ? ia l machinery has been received at the Ruakura animal research station in connection with the growing of 100 acres of vegetable! for the armed forces, states another message from Hamilton. A greenhouse has been established for the germination of seed and the growing of young plants, including cabbages cauliflowers, lettuce, ieeki, beetroot' tomatoes and onions. ' The preparation or the land has been carried out by the farm employees under the direction of the ag f r K Mr - ?■ E. Rodda, but later oUier labour, including women, will be required in connection with the planting and harvesting.
