N.Z.E.F. HOLDS ON

COUNTER-ATTACKS RESISTED N.Z.E.F. Official War Correspondent. CAIRO, July 22. After taking their objective in the face of fierce* enemy opposition, the New Zealanders were heavily coun-ter-attacked yesterday. The New Zealanders had driven up in a northwesterly direction to take a point slightly south-west of Ruweisat Ridge, from which the enemy had been cleared. The New Zealanders attacked on Tuesday night and were heavily counter-attacked, but drove on and by dawn had taken their objective on the enemy minefield. German forces were thrown in against the New Zealanders in a desperate counter-attack yesterday, but as far as is known in Cairo at noon to-day the New Zealanders held all their positions. The brigade which was engaged in the fiercest fighting was New Zealand's youngest brigade.
